Leave These Home Improvements To The Pros

I still remember the time I asked my husband to make a door to hide our electrical box in the basement and was surprised when I came home from work several hours later and he was still working on it. What I thought would be a simple task killed his entire day. Of course, what I was looking for was a simple door on hinges and what he created was, lets just say, modern art. That comedic situation aside, there are times when making home improvements yourself is a great way to increase the value of your home without having to pay a contractor. But, you don’t want to take on every project yourself. Whether they are complicated, dangerous or illegal, these are the home improvements Bob Vila says you should leave to the pros.

  • Install a gas stove.
    • Anything involving gas can be dangerous, so you’ll want to hire a plumber to install the gas line.
  • Replace light fixtures.
    • If your changes will affect electrical wiring, your safest choice is an electrician.
  • Remove old installation.
    • In older homes it could contain asbestos, which can be harmful to your health.
  • Knock down a wall.
    • Your city could require a permit if the wall is structural.
  • HVAC Repair.
    • Licensed professionals must undergo a thorough training and certification process to handle HVAC systems and potentially dangerous chemicals such as Freon. Plus, unlicensed repair work could lead the manufacturer to void your warranty.
  • Hot Water Tank Replacement.
    • Anytime you’re dealing with electricity and gas lines, it is a great idea to let a pro handle it. “Because of the permits, code adherences, safety regulations and risks – like possible carbon monoxide emissions – a licensed plumber is required to take on this home task,” Vila recommends.
